Book: “Digital Game-Based Learning”

This book was first published several years ago, I think it was back in 2002. At that time, the thoughts put forth in it were groundbreaking. Although many others have joined the field and produced good materials, it is well worth reading.

Above all, it serves as an eye-opener for those that are unfamiliar with video gaming and it’s importance in learning. Mr.Prensky introduces the main idea, that games are good for learning, by showing how different today’s kids are in terms of how they relate to electronic media, and how educational systems are not responding to the change. The rest is all about why game based learning works, and how it is implemented.

If you are looking for a book that provides an in-depth understanding of how digital game-based learning works based on current learning theory, this is not the right book for you. In that case you will be better served by James Paul Gee’s “What Video Games Have to Teach Us About Learning and Literacy” (I’ll get around to reviewing that one very soon…).
